At the Munich Security Conference, we’re diving into the critical intersection of cybersecurity and national security. Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG), combining Mandiant Intelligence and Threat Analysis Group expertise, is leading the charge in understanding and combating cyber threats. GTIG released a new report highlighting the urgent need for international cooperation and public-private partnerships. The report discusses the current state of cybercrime, emphasizing why these attacks must be considered a national security threat. Yesterday Sundar Pichai, Google CEO, spoke here at the AI Action Summit in Paris. We’re at a very important moment for AI globally, and Sundar highlighted why Google has been researching, pioneering and investing in AI for more than a decade – because fundamentally it offers an enormous opportunity to improve people’s lives, access information and knowledge, power innovation and the economy, advance science and help us tackle some of humanity’s greatest challenges in healthcare, crisis response and more. The opportunity with AI is as big as it gets. At the same time he was clear that the positive outcomes are not guaranteed – it’s up to all of us to make sure that we achieve all of this and that as many people as possible benefit. Cyber attacks increased globally by 44% in 2024, and nearly half of small and medium-sized businesses in Europe experienced a cyber attack in the past two years. The world needs more cybersecurity experts. That’s why in 2023, we launched the $15M Google.org Cybersecurity Seminar program committing $15 million to increase access and opportunities for cybersecurity education. This week, Google.org announced support for 20+ universities across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa that will help expand access to cybersecurity education for thousands of students.
