    JUST LAUNCHED

    The Works

Welcome to The Works, the playlist featuring the latest and best from the world of classical music. At the top of this week’s playlist is “Tshepo - I”, a prayerful and deeply moving track from the African singer and cellist Abel Selaocoe’s latest album Hymns of Bantu, out this week. “It’s about things that we can all connect to,” Selaocoe tells Apple Music Classical, talking about Hymns of Bantu; “but it also contains pieces written in the context of my home, of my culture.” Music, in other words, that he has long lived with and loved, represented through his extraordinary musicianship and abilities as a cellist and singer. On Selaocoe’s album, “Tshepo - I” is an oasis of calm as he sings music that recalls the church services and spiritual experiences familiar to him since childhood. “Tshepo” means “faith” in Tswana, but for Selaocoe faith is an experience closer to the Sesotho verb “tshepa”—hope. There is a universality in the music, as his soft-breathed vocals, gently underpinned by pizzicato strings, also recall something of Bach’s famous “Air” from the Baroque composer’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major. The Works is updated regularly by our editors, so if you find a piece of music or performance you love, make sure you add it to your library.
