As of 2023, the median new family home in the US measures in at just under 2,180 square feet. According to new research, however, there's only one state where homebuyers with a $300,000 budget can afford a property of roughly this size.

To reveal how much house $300,000 can get you across America, GOBankingRates found each state's price per square foot, then calculated the total average square footage of home that can be bought for $300,000 by state.

West Virginia is the only state where a property of more than 2,000 square feet can be purchased for $300,000, with that sum affording homebuyers an average of 2,185 square feet.

People get the least bang for their buck in Hawaii, where $300,000 can buy just 443 square feet of house — that's less than the size of a typical studio apartment.

Dumb article, there are a great many states where you can buy homes greater than 1,000 feet for 100K including some of this list. You need to look at it by city. There are perfectly acceptable places you can buy 2,000 feed for 300K in Arizona.

Yeah, not surprising. But I imagine it lines up pretty closely with income, as in cheap property is in places where jobs are not widely available or good.
