As inflation continues to rise in the US, Americans are facing higher prices for everyday food items. While Walmart's groceries are among the most affordable in the country, shoppers in some states will be spending a lot more money at the store than others.

To find out where Americans are paying the most for a Walmart shop, CashNetUSA compiled a 12-item shopping list of grocery staples, and used the Walmart website to find the prices of those items in each state's biggest city. Then, they compared the total cost of each state's shopping list against the national average to work out the price premium shoppers are paying across the US.

The team also looked at each state's average wage to work out the affordability of a standard Walmart shopping list, and calculated how much the store's prices increased between 2023 and 2024. All figures are accurate as of 2024.

Walmart groceries are priciest in Hawaii, where a typical grocery shop costs 33.98 percent more than the national average.

Fellow non-contiguous state Alaska is home to the second-highest price premium, with shoppers spending 32.05 percent more at Walmart than the average American.

Alaskans have also seen the fastest price increases of any state. The cost of Walmart groceries in the Last Frontier rose almost 12 percent in the year between 2023 and 2024.

Residents of Texas enjoy the cheapest Walmart groceries in the country, paying 4.77 percent below the national average for a basket of staples. Maryland (-4.41 percent) follows closely behind.

When it comes to affordability, Mississippi ranks lowest, with people on the local average wage having to work one hour, 43 minutes to pay for a typical Walmart shop.

The most affordable state, on the other hand, is Massachusetts, where shoppers only have to work an average of 59 minutes to afford the same items.
