Great panel this AM with Nicholas Harrigan & Tommaso Macrì at the "1st Workshop on Broadly Accessible #QuantumComputing". Some really thoughtful questions about quantum and #HPC, how to think about developing applications, the role of energy and power consumption in thinking about quantum advantage, and how to develop new algorithms for such quantum-centric supercomputing architectures.

Is Rigetti the weakest of the quantum computing hardware vendors, at least in the U.S., and destined to fail, an all-out crash and burn? How much longer can they limp along, falling further behind IBM, IonQ, Google, QuEra, and Quantinuum? And even if they can limp along a bit longer, are they destined to fail, as Zapata did (even though they weren't a hardware company, they do share the taint of quantum's slow rate of progress towards production-scale practical quantum computing.) Maybe they do have a brighter prospect for acquisition than Zapata did, but I'm not at all confident about that. (I'm not so sure about PsiQuantum, either, but that's a separate story - they may have enough cash and supporters to limp along longer than Rigetti - or maybe not. I'm not persuaded that they have a viable technology at all, just an alluring story that mentions "photonic" as if it were a magical bullet.) Disclosure: I am a shareholder - in every public company which is seriously into quantum computing. #QuantumComputing #QuantumApplications #QuantumAlgorithms #QuantumInformationScience #QIS #QuantumTechnologies #QuantumTech #Quantum

In my opinion, DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative is very important and I'm personally glad to see DARPA doing their best to understand the current state of maturation of quantum computers. This is a technology that could turn the entire paradigm of information security on its head and make almost all current cyber security measures obsolete. You can bet that DARPA knows exactly where the large companies are when it comes to quantum computing (IBM and a couple other publicly traded companies come right to mind as leaders in this space) but this is one of those technologies where a "dark" start-up company or unpublished academic research could potentially be extremely disruptive. QBI is one of the many ways that DARPA, along with other government agencies, is trying to understand better the possible timelines involved in rolling out a scalable quantum computer. Given the steady progress over the past few years, I think it is likely that I will live to see powerful quantum computers available and I'm hoping this isn't a discipline that moves faster than the world can adapt.
We’re inviting U.S. & international #quantumcomputing companies – both small & large – to participate in our Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) proposers day Sept 3. The in-person & virtual event includes option for sidebar discussions with the QBI program manager: https://ow.ly/CYTl50SYMQy
