My bets where AI won't replace humans: 1) Human connection: Like the one that many of us just had at Config. 2) Shared human experience: When you look at another person's eye and you know you've been through a similar joyful and painful journey. 3) Real stories behind art and culture: I listen to music, and I like paintings not just because they feel good, but because there's a real human story behind it that speaks back to 2. 4) Ingenious net new creative fields: AI can use past things to create something new by mixing them, but it's mostly always can't really create something completely new and unseen. 5) What's your bet?

This a creative use of it. We have also been able to have formulas and smart inference for a long time. It never gets old to mix the right fundamentals in computer science, product and marketing to build great products.

Building regulation around AI requires a conversation that supports both innovation and responsibility. I'm happy to see that bills are being drafted and vetoed—it's a process we go through to make things better. I just hope this is a trend that leads towards more bills being presented and more discourse being had in public about this important topic. At the same time, the tech industry needs to think responsibly about guardrails. It's why I'm optimistic about companies like meetsynthia.ai and Squirro who are building real-world solutions today to help organizations leverage Generative AI solutions today while maintaining responsible guardrails. The concept of one-person unicorns—startups valued at over a billion dollars operated by a single individual—is becoming a reality thanks to advancements in AI. Visionaries like Sam Altman and Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger predict that AI will automate many business operations, enabling solo founders to achieve what previously required large teams. AI tools can handle tasks ranging from product development and customer service to marketing and sales. For instance, using AI-powered bots, I spend 25-40% of my time on activities like UX copywriting, analyzing user flows, creating developer tasks, and managing product roadmaps. These tools streamline my workflow, allowing me to focus on strategic decisions. In my projects, I design custom AI bots in ChatGPT for every task. Over time, these bots become smarter, accumulating information and providing insights with incredible accuracy. They function like ideal coworkers with impeccable memory and logic. Here are some ways my AI bots improve my work: UX Copywriting: My bots generate engaging and contextually relevant text, saving time and ensuring clarity in communication. User Flow Analysis: They automate the analysis of user flows, providing actionable insights that enhance user experience. Product Analytics: My bots create tasks for developers, replacing the need for a product analyst, and post-launch, they analyze metrics to refine and optimize the product. Skills may get you recognition, but it's the behaviors that get you promoted 🎖️ I first shared this thought with an IC who was laser-focused on getting promoted from senior to lead. He was doing excellent work and building a solid reputation for his craft, but it wasn't translating into the promotion he was aiming for. Together, we shifted focus away from chasing a title and instead built a growth plan centered on behavior change. As these behaviors became part of his everyday work, the promotion naturally followed. Design excellence—whether in crafting polished interfaces, conducting insightful research, or delivering seamless user journeys—will get you recognition 👏. But exceeding expectations requires more than that. It's about demonstrating behaviors that reflect initiative, proactive communication, and trust-building through collaboration. Growth means thriving in ambiguity, going beyond your assigned tasks, and helping those around you succeed by modeling a multiplier mindset. What does this look like in practice? → Mentoring peers even when it's not in your job description → Aligning your efforts with strategic goals 🎯 → Articulating how your work impacts the bigger picture → Influencing without authority → Fostering an environment where everyone can do their best work Along with honing your design craft, cultivate these behaviors: → Build trust through consistent, reliable performance 🤝 → Foster collaboration across teams and disciplines, thinking beyond immediate tasks to consider broader implications → Ask insightful questions that drive projects forward → Seek and thoughtfully apply feedback By doing this, you'll grow into a better designer—one who not only delivers great work but also empowers others to thrive. And when that happens, the promotion becomes the cherry on top 🍒. Remember, it's a journey. Be patient with yourself as you develop these behaviors. The key is consistency and genuine effort. Was recently confused/frustrated by an article on Search Engine Journal titled "Ex-Google CEO Implies AI Search Will Have No Links". In the article Eric Schmidt is quoted to have said " It’s pretty important to understand that Google is not about blue links, it’s about organizing the world’s information. What better tool than the arrival of AI to do that better. Do you think you can monetize that? You betcha." It does raise the question - what's the value of owning a website for your business, if discoverability is going to be owned by Google? I'm particularly curious about who will be accountable for misrepresentation of your business information, services and products if an AI is telling people all about you (in its "own words") rather than you...? For example, if the AI oversteps the bounds (hallucinates) and claims your product is waterproof when in fact it is water resistant. A person buying the product wanting reparations for being deceived would blame who? After years and big dollars spent on brand identity, web presence and customer service culture any business big or small would be at a loss discovering that they've been blind-sided by Google in this way I imagine. A more concerning thought... Right now doctors and specialists will often refer patients to websites for them to get access to information specific to their needs. A scenario where the patient forgets the URL and the search AI hallucinates providing medical information that may or may not be relevant is a pretty chilling thought. Sadly the future of the website is increasingly grim it seems. On the plus side if you no longer publish webpages or blog posts all your precious intellectual property (that these AIs have had free training with will disappear) will be yours again. Time: Two Perspectives, One Shared Truth Recently, I came across a video featuring Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, where he shared a thought-provoking perspective on time: “I don’t wear a watch, and the reason I don’t wear a watch is now is the most important time. I’m not ambitious. I don’t aspire to do more; I aspire to be better at what I’m currently doing.” He explained that Nvidia doesn’t rely on long-term plans—what they’re doing today defines their focus. It’s about being fully present and trusting that excellence in the moment will shape what’s ahead. In contrast, the Swiss approach time with a sense of reverence and precision. Here, time is sacred—more than a tool for efficiency, it’s a way of honoring life itself. By mastering time, the Swiss create room to explore, enjoy, and leave a meaningful impact. For me, the clock towers scattered across Switzerland symbolize this philosophy, making time itself a cornerstone of extraordinary living. At first glance, these perspectives may seem like opposites: one centered on flowing with the present, the other on disciplined structure. But living in Zurich has shown me how these ideas actually converge. Both are rooted in a passion for making the most of life. Whether it’s Huang’s focus on making the present extraordinary or the Swiss dedication to optimizing every moment, both reflect a singleness of pursuit in living intentionally and purposefully. This contrast—and the harmony within it—is clear in Zurich. It’s a culture that values achievement but also treasures the joy of the moment. It’s about channeling your energy into the time you have, crafting something remarkable, and staying true to your aspirations. I don’t think Huang is advocating for abandoning control entirely. Instead, his passion creates such clarity of purpose that he can focus fully on the present without overthinking every step. When you’re deeply connected to a magnificent obsession, you naturally align with your vision, and the path unfolds as you go. This mix of focus and freedom deeply resonates with me. It’s a mindset I admire and strive to embody: pursuing excellence while embracing the beauty of the here and now. This contrast serves as a reminder that innovation thrives in the balance between structure and spontaneity. Whether you’re pushing boundaries in technology or rethinking a business model, it’s the passion for what you’re doing right now that fuels long-term success. Big ideas are born from those moments where focus meets freedom.

🍜Anybody up for some ramen? I am excited to share that I am back in the garage, building again (it’s actually a house in the Berkeley Hills). We are taking the wraps off of Supercog AI, a new startup focused on solving Application Integration using LLM powered agents. My co-founder in this new venture is a great friend of mine (and a former co-founder partner), Alex Osborne. Alex and I have worked around the application integration space for a long time, and we are unrealistically excited about applying the GenAI stack to this problem. Not many people relish the task to get some bits to move from system A to system B. But it’s a critical job to be done, and that’s led to a lot of brittle scripts, a myriad of inflexible “no code” tools, and a lot of hand crafted SQL. But the power of the Large Language Model, trained on a huge corpus of information, offers a remarkable tool to solve this problem. The LLM you use today already knows the APIs of hundreds of popular systems. It knows the SQL dialects of every major database. It understands the semantics and data schemas of many popular SaaS systems. It understands much of the specific domain in which your business operates. I like to call the AI revolution “the last platform shift”. That may turn out to be hyperbole, but I definitely believe we are in the very early stages of seeing what this new stack can enable. I know we are hardly the first folks to claim that “amazing stuff is coming!”. But this is why Alex and I have decided to focus on a real and hard problem. If we can prove that LLMs can power a new way to solve this problem, it will be the first successful *new* approach in 15 years.. We will have much more to share about this new platform soon.
