New Tesla Patent Reveals Clues to an Exciting Future of Humanoid Robots and AI Integration In a interesting discussion, Herbert Ong and Scott Walter dive deep into Tesla's recently published patent application WO2024072984A1 (link in comments). Entitled "Actuator and actuator design methodology," the patent primarily focuses on controlling robot movement through strategic actuator placement. However, the document also unveils important clues about the potential for end-to-end neural net training of humanoid robots, reminiscent of Tesla's approach to training its vehicles with FSD. Ong and Walter explore the concept of personalized humanoid skills. Imagine purchasing a bot with built-in capabilities, then having the option to augment and customize those skills through a "Skills Store" akin to Apple's App Store. This opens up a world of possibilities for tailoring robots to specific tasks and preferences. The discussion also touches on the potential for various robot form factors, each designed to excel at particular skills. Picture a tennis-playing robot that comes pre-trained with basic volleying instructions, but requires a "Skills Upgrade" to perform at a master level. Robotics and AI will touch all aspects of life and society. This one “could” be a path in reducing or eliminating the herbicides used on crops. On the technical side, from the article, this is astounding. Who would have thought even 10 years ago GPUs would be utilized in this manner. “Powered by 24 NVIDIA GPUs, Carbon Robotics’ vehicles use deep-learning-based computer vision models to autonomously identify and eliminate weeds via CO2 lasers. LaserWeeder, as the product is called, processes 4.7 million high-resolution images per hour, zapping 5,000 weeds per minute, according to the company. AgTech Ecosystem - we finally get some good funding news thanks to NVIDIA's strategic investment in Carbon Robotics. I have delivered the bad news about the AgriFoodTech funding space across multiple posts for multiple months. The short version - overall venture funding in the space is down from $50B (2021) to $30B (2022) to $15.6B (2023), thanks in large part to struggles from CEA and alt-protein (which were 42% of the 2021 number) and a lack of exits (in all segments, including AgTech - we have gone from 60-80 IPOs per year to 5-10 and not many folks have a solid theory as to why, but all acknowledge that fact is not good for startups or investors). In addition, the current consensus among my investor friends is that the likely number for 2024 will be between $12-15B (low end) and $15-20B (high end) and that 2025 may be in the same range unless strategic investments and/or exits accelerate. So we have a 68% drop in funding and a likely steady state of 1-2 years at the new number. As I've said, that looks like nuclear winter for several startups in key segments. The news that NVIDIA made a strategic investment to round out Carbon Robotics C round is great news. If we can't get the traditional strategics (John Deere, CNH in equipment; Bayer and Syngenta in biologicals) to pick up their activity, can we find dollars in new segments and new strategic investors? NVIDIA may be one - as a key supplier to Carbon Robotics (which uses 24 NVIDIA GPUs per laser weeder robot - and these are not cheap chips), they see this as a potential growth lever into AgTech. That said, it's unclear how many GPUs can be sold and if there are any complementary activities to be expected - NVIDIA is dominant in the GPU space so this may turn out to be a complete one off. Even if it is, the fact that the AgTech space was able to secure part of a fundraising round from a new (and from my vantage point very unexpected) partner is good news. Time will tell what it brings long term, and some of the facts above should temper everyone's enthusiasm, but well done to Carbon Robotics to get this deal closed and announced. It's good for the whole space. One final thought - AI got $50B in venture funding last year, so are the big players (OpenAI, Microsoft, Google) going to be looking to do similar investments with AgTech companies that highly leverage AI in a reasonably sizable vertical (agriculture) which leverages the horizontal progress that $50B should accelerate?
