Building next-generation space stations

About us

Founded in 2021 by Jed McCaleb, Vast is developing humanity’s next-generation space stations and pioneering the path to long-term living and thriving in space. Haven-1, scheduled to be the world’s first commercial space station, is currently in development and is expected to launch in 2026. Vast is also developing Haven-2, the proposed successor to the International Space Station (ISS), designed to serve NASA’s Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) program as a micro-gravity laboratory in space. Vast’s long-term ambition is to create artificial gravity habitations that enable humans to live in space, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring a spacefaring future for all.

Vast Unveils Final Design for Haven-1, the World’s First Commercial Space Station We’re excited to introduce the final design for Haven-1, a groundbreaking space station that sets a new standard for human-centric design, comfort, and productivity in space. Haven-1 merges cutting-edge microgravity lab advancements with a focus on astronaut well-being and features: - 1.1m Observation Window Dome for stunning views of Earth - Patent-Pending Sleep System designed for optimal rest in zero gravity - Onboard Fitness System to improve cardiovascular and bone health - Warm, welcoming Interiors with natural materials, including maple wood veneer Guided by visionary designer Peter Russell-Clarke and supported by veteran NASA astronaut Andrew J. Feustel, Haven-1 offers an unparalleled experience in space, balancing innovation with comfort. Chief Design and Marketing Officer Hillary Coe emphasized the importance of human-first design, stating, “We have big ambitions to create a future where everyone is living and thriving on Earth and in space. This requires a shift in how we approach design for all backgrounds and comfort levels.” We are excited to continue to push the boundaries of human spaceflight and pioneer the path to long-term living and thriving in space. https://lnkd.in/geRdns4w

Haven-1 solar arrays use triple junction solar cells to capture a broad range of light wavelengths to help power our systems. We perform electroluminescence (EL) tests, applying currents to the cells to emit light at known wavelengths. EL testing allows us to inspect each semiconductor layer, identify potential damage, and ensure peak performance.

We’re honored to announce that Andrew J. Feustel has stepped into an expanded role as Lead Astronaut at Vast. Since he joined us as a Vast advisor in 2023, he has had a significant impact on our mission. With 23 years as a NASA astronaut—including service as Acting Chief Astronaut (2022–2023), Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office (2020–2022), and 226 days in space across three missions (Hubble Space Telescope, 2009; ISS, 2011 and 2018)—Drew brings unparalleled expertise to our team. In this role, he will continue to help shape the future of our next-generation space stations, guiding engineering and design with his firsthand experience of living and working in space. Drew will also be involved in flight crew training, mentorship, and evaluation, ensuring astronauts are mission-ready. His leadership will be vital as we push the boundaries of space exploration and move closer to the launch of Haven-1.

International partnerships are key to building onto the legacy of the International Space Station. As we work to create a commercial future for human presence in low-Earth orbit, we are proud to have entered into an MoU with the Czech government late last year. Czech TV (ČT24) recently aired Vast’s progress toward building and launching Haven-1, scheduled to be the world’s first commercial space station.
