Check out this information on High Pressure Processing (HPP) as a potential control to mitigate the risk of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
🐶 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that manufacturers of cat and dog foods using uncooked or unpasteurized materials derived from poultry and cattle must include Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus as a hazard in their food safety plans. 📖 Research indicates that High Pressure Processing (#HPP) can serve as a potential control to mitigate the risk. Subjecting chicken meat homogenate to 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗣𝗮 / 𝟳𝟮,𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝘀𝗶 for only 𝟭𝟱 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘀 at 𝟭𝟱 °𝗖 / 𝟱𝟵 °𝗙 inactivated more than 5-log of HPAI (source: https://lnkd.in/dS7xwcTG). ❄ HPP is a nonthermal preservation technology that inactivates foodborne pathogens and viruses while preserving the raw-like attributes of pet food formulas. Alternative methods include heat pasteurization or supply-chain-applied controls to ensure that ingredients do not come from HPAI-infected animals. However, these methods may negatively affect quality, or require intensive testing procedures to confirm the absence of the virus.
