It's bills like Washington's new textile EPR legislation that not only highlight the urgent need for circularity, but create massive opportunities for resale. Established platforms like ThredUp, with our Resale-as-a-Service, are uniquely positioned to help brands navigate this shift and scale these environmentally effective solutions. #Resale #Circularity #EPR

Thank you to Melissa Daniels and Modern Retail for shedding light on the textile waste crisis and the solutions being explored, particularly through circular fashion. Collaboration between brands, policymakers, and consumers is crucial to creating a more sustainable and circular fashion system. To echo Rachel Van Metre Kibbe, CEO of ACT (American Circular Textiles), it's imperative for brands to actively engage in policy discussions to ensure the development of effective and sustainable solutions.
Federal efforts to promote textile recycling are likely at a standstill in the Trump administration. But states and brands are poised to take the lead. In this piece by Melissa Daniels, we speak to Rachel Van Metre Kibbe of ACT (American Circular Textiles), Emily Mikhaiel of NAZEERAH, James Reinhart of ThredUp, and Isabel Friedman of Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

Thrifters using our new AI shopping features are 65% more likely to get an item that they like. Our Chief Product and Technology Officer Dan DeMeyere says that with generative AI, ThredUp is on the path to becoming a personal thrift store for each of its customers. We're solving for the overwhelm that comes with a platform housing more than 4 million unique items at any given time, and it's just the beginning.
Many of the largest retailers made major investments in generative AI this year and have reported success in doing so, seeing it as not just a way to cut labor but to create personalized shopping experiences.
In 2024, retailers like Walmart & ThredUp used generative AI to make shopping more personal

Both sides of the aisle seem serious about reprioritizing domestic business and manufacturing. In her latest OpEd, Rachel Van Metre Kibbe claims that we have a rare but narrow opportunity to lead the world in manufacturing once again by earmarking substantial funds for circular textiles, the next era of industrial manufacturing. “If we don’t capture this next wave of the Industrial Revolution, someone else will.”
The U.S. is the largest consumer of fashion in the world, and the largest used clothing exporter. This is both a challenge and an opportunity, because it means we have the majority of the feedstock for clothing recycling in the world. If we don’t capture this next wave of the Industrial Revolution, someone else will.

The US Government Accountability Office just released a report on textile waste urging federal action to tackle textile recycling challenges and promote circularity. It is imperative the private sector understands why now is a critical moment to engage further on these issues, before costs for brands and retailers skyrocket. Join a webinar this Thursday led by ACT (American Circular Textiles), the policy coalition we’re proud to be part of, to learn how you can be part of the solution.
📢 The State of Textiles, Recycling, and Policy: A Critical Moment for Action Key Highlights: • 🗓️ December 12, 2024: The GAO released a report on textile waste, calling for federal coordination via an interagency group to tackle textile recycling challenges and promote circularity. • 🗨️ The Biden Administration’s Response: While acknowledging the report’s findings, the administration declined to form the interagency group, stating that textile waste is “not a priority.” • 🗣️ December 13, 2024: Elon Musk then weighed in, controversially calling recycling “pointless,” amplifying a conversation about the limitations of current recycling systems and the need for innovation. What could this mean for the private sector, especially brands and retailers, and the future of U.S. fashion circularity policy? You are invited to attend ACT (American Circular Textiles)’s first free public webinar, this week! We will go over key GAO report findings, discuss state textile EPR bills, potential future scenarios, and help the private sector understand why now is a critical moment to engage further on these issues, before costs for brands and retailers skyrocket.
