The Trump administration’s executive orders related to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and transgender people severely limit civil rights organizations’ abilities to provide critical social and health services such as fair housing, affordable credit, and job opportunities. We've joined the National Urban League in a lawsuit to overturn these orders, which reverse decades of civil rights progress and pose an existential threat to organizations that protect civil rights and provide shelter, services, and support to those in need. We are grateful to be represented by the Legal Defense Fund, Lambda Legal, and NFHA’s attorneys. “‘Out of Many, One’ is our national motto – any effort to divide, stoke fear and treat people unfairly is not in line with our nation’s founding principles. America is best when united and relentlessly pursuing a country where everyone, regardless of their background, has a fair chance at reaching the American Dream,” said Lisa Rice, NFHA President & CEO. Today, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. (LDF) and Lambda Legal filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of the National Urban League, the National Fair Housing Alliance and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago challenging three anti-equity executive orders from President Trump related to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and transgender people. Said NFHA President and CEO Lisa Rice, "Fair housing is a national policy of the U.S. Our nation’s fair housing principles are embedded in the Constitution and civil rights statutes secured by the blood, sweat, tears, and lives of millions of people who fought to make our Declaration of Independence and Constitution real for everyone in this country. The Constitution and our civil rights laws are centered on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. The President cannot undo the Constitution or take away our rights by affixing a signature to an executive order. The administration’s Executive Orders and OMB funding freeze memorandum have caused chaos, fear, insecurity, dysfunction, and loss of rights. The Administration’s illegal actions put all people in harm’s way, driving up the cost of housing and leaving millions exposed to discrimination, harassment, and retaliation with no structure for protection. ‘Out of Many, One’ is our national motto – any effort to divide, stoke fear and treat people unfairly is not in line with our nation’s founding principles. America is best when united and relentlessly pursuing a country where everyone, regardless of their background, has a fair chance at reaching the American Dream.” Read the full release and legal filing here: https://lnkd.in/e5KNaa2p

What does housing discrimination look like? It looks like a landlord telling prospective tenants of color that no units are available while showing units to prospective white tenants. If this has happened to you, file a complaint at https://bit.ly/4gNl4nZ.

With efforts underway to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, we wanted to take a moment to shout out two of its staunchest defenders! Rep. Joyce Beatty recently joined Rep. Maxine Waters and House Democrats to protest efforts to dismantle the CFPB. In her remarks, Rep. Beatty highlighted how 77% of Republicans support the CFPB, which has returned $21 billion to hard-working Americans. “The CFPB’s work is not about politics—it’s about fairness and the ability to achieve the American Dream,” she said in a statement after the fact. “The CFPB ensures that everyday people, not just the wealthy, have a fighting chance at financial stability.” Rep. Waters and NFHA played an integral role in the creation of the CFPB following the 2008 financial crisis. The bureau not only protects from financial fraud, but also safeguards from civil rights violations. A return to predatory and discriminatory lending practices will disproportionately harm vulnerable communities.

In 1968, the Kerner Commission exposed the roots of racism and inequality in America. In the new book “Creating Justice in a Multiracial Democracy,” National Fair Housing Alliance leaders Lisa Rice, Michael Akinwumi, and Nikitra Bailey, outline an updated, set of policy recommendations to address housing inequality, accounting for technological advancements like AI, to fundamentally overhaul our nation’s housing and finance markets and scale housing justice. If these solutions are implemented, as outlined, the impact will allow communities of color to fairly access opportunity and contribute to economic stability for all. ICYMI: This week the National Fair Housing Alliance was proud to stand with protestors against efforts to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. We want to be clear: the CFPB’s legitimacy is incontrovertible. The agency has returned over $21 billion to millions of consumers who were victimized by fraud, abuse, and discrimination. Millions of consumers pushed Congress to create the agency after the devastation of the Great Recession, which was the result of the housing and financial crash in 2008. Since its founding, the CFPB has taken significant actions to protect everyday people and America’s most vulnerable consumers, including, people of color, immigrants, students, veterans, and low-wealth families. The attack on the CFPB is ushering in the era of a return to discriminatory and predatory lending by financial giants and Big Tech going unchecked. We will continue to stand and defend the CFPB.
