📊 Private equity in emerging markets has been a quiet powerhouse, delivering substantial returns for those who know where to look. Our latest research reveals that IFC's private equity investments have outperformed the MSCI Emerging Markets Index by an average of 16% over the period 1990-2023. This success is driven by a small percentage of high-growth deals, or "home runs," which significantly boost overall portfolio performance. By focusing on firm-specific factors and diversifying investments, savvy investors can achieve competitive returns while supporting economic growth in emerging markets. Why do #Fiji’s e-payment reforms matter? Faster payments: No more delays—transactions that once took a minimum of a day now take seconds. ✅ Inclusive #finance: Fintech companies like Solé are reaching underserved communities, ensuring more Fijians can access financial services. ✅ Business efficiency: Small businesses save time, reduce risks, and embrace e-wallet payments. ✅ Global standards: A modernized system means smoother transactions for tourists, boosting Fiji’s $3.5 FJ billion tourism industry. “Enabling financial institutions to transfer funds to each other, in real time, creates the foundation for new and innovative digital payment products and services,” says Clair McNamara, the Deputy High Commissioner for Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. When COVID-19 struck in 2020, Fiji had an outdated digital payment system. Now, four years later, the Pacific Island nation now boasts a modernized, real-time, and secure financial infrastructure, thanks to efforts led by the Reserve Bank of Fiji, IFC, and The World Bank. Excellent new research from my IFC colleagues and partners on tying funding for development to verified results and outcomes in social and environmental impact. This can drive significant investment into sectors that are underfinanced, such as clean cooking or small-scale agribusiness, and touch and transform the lives of those often marginalized, from women to the poorest at the bottom of the economic pyramid. Fiji is stepping into the future with digital payments! For Fatala Roma, an office cleaner in Suva, Fiji, sending much-needed money home to her family used to take days. Now, with a simple swipe on her MyCash mobile wallet, Roma’s mother receives funds instantly—200 km away on Fiji’s second main island, Vanua Levu. This is just one example of how Fiji’s National Payment System reforms—supported by IFC and The World Bank—are transforming #financial transactions. By making payments faster, more secure, and more accessible, the reforms are improving #financialinclusion, business efficiency, and tourism competitiveness. “The system is also helping to expand the network of places across Fiji where people can deposit money and pay for goods and services. This is about making it easier and more convenient for the people of Fiji, and visitors, to access a safe, affordable, faster and trusted e-payment system,” says Charlotte Darlow, the High Commissioner for New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade From small businesses like Supercuts, a barber shop in downtown Suva, to Fintech startups like Solé, a financial platform for Indigenous Fijians, #Fiji is embracing a #cashless future—one that empowers citizens, supports #economic growth, and even strengthens climate resilience. What does a cashless economy mean for the future of developing nations? I recently returned from my first visit to Pakistan, where I had the privilege of engaging with H.E. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, and industry leaders, businesses, and entrepreneurs. Pakistan has strong potential. With a sustained focus on reforms and boosting private sector investment, the country is poised to accelerate sustainable economic growth, create jobs, and unlock transformative opportunities for its people and businesses. At IFC - International Finance Corporation, we are dedicated to supporting Pakistan’s progress. Over the next decade, we are committed to investing $2 billion annually in key sectors like infrastructure, agriculture, banking, and digital transformation. These investments are essential in driving long-term, sustainable development for the country.
