We recently read an article by Susan Kelly and here are the key takeaways: - 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆: A 10% tariff on Chinese imports, plus potential tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and the EU, is creating challenges for medical device companies. - 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀: MedTech relies on offshore manufacturing, making a sudden shift to U.S. production costly and complicated. -𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸: Groups like AdvaMed warn tariffs could lead to shortages, higher costs, and slower innovation. - 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀: Some companies are shifting production to Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Mexico, but China remains essential for key components. - 𝗢𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: High U.S. labor costs and competition from other industries make bringing production back difficult. - 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲𝘀: Retaliatory tariffs could make U.S. medical devices less competitive globally. - 𝗥&𝗗 𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸: Higher costs might force companies to cut research and innovation budgets.
