On the occasion of AI Action Summit in Paris, ANEC is releasing its fact-sheet on Trustworthy AI standards for consumers: - the European AI Act uses standards to provide presumption of conformity with the legal requirements for AI high-risk systems, thus reversing the burden of proof of compliance. - As AI reduces human decision-making and intervention in the provision of products and services, how are consumer rights protected? - European standards on AI high-risk systems should support the uptake of human-centric and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI), while ensuring a high level of protection of health, safety, fundamental rights. - With its long-time experience in product and services standards, ANEC is actively contributing to the development of the AI European standards to ensure consumers rights are upheld and that consumers can trust AI. https://lnkd.in/ehSuAw2T

As consumers live more and more in cities and urban areas, multi-storey buildings are becoming increasingly common. Safe vertical transport is essential for accessibility, particularly for persons with disabilities and older persons. Lifts are a key component of inclusive urban infrastructure, yet issues such as poor maintenance, high upgrade costs, and inadequate accessibility persist for consumers. The evaluation of the Lifts Directive should ensure that lifts serve their purpose as an inclusive and safe means of vertical transport for all consumers. Policy-making and the processes that support it - including #standardisation - need to be #inclusive and allow all interested parties to have an effective voice - of the needs and expectations of business and society are both to be met. #AI is no exception and must not be allowed to continue as an exception. We are pleased to have signed the open letter promoted by Renaissance Numérique. Raising #standards for #consumers.

Digital exclusion is not equivalent to digital illiteracy—it’s about accessibility, privacy, and choice. At Keep Me Posted EU, we recognize that many face barriers to digital-only communication, from disabilities to security concerns. Ensuring access to paper-based options is key to an inclusive society where no one is left behind. Our President, Dermott M Jewell, and Deputy Director-General, Chiara Giovannini, attended yesterday's third meeting of the European Commission's High-Level Forum on #Standardisation (#HLFS). In his presentation to the meeting, Dermott noted that EU household expenditure reached 52.1% of GDP in 2023, marking a return to near pre-pandemic levels and underscoring the powerful truth that #consumers are the backbone of Europe’s economy. Their spending drives prosperity, and their confidence fuels growth. This places a responsibility on the framework of legislation and standardisation in Europe to reflect their needs and safeguard their rights, ensuring that no one is excluded or left behind. He went on to stress that #inclusiveness of the process must remain at the heart of the European Standardisation System. Its unique strength lies in its ability to bring together diverse stakeholders—businesses, governments, civil society and consumer representatives—around one table. This collaboration ensures that our standards are not only economically-relevant but also socially equitable, reflecting the diversity of Europe’s people and the challenges they face. Inclusiveness is not just a principle—it is a necessity for building a fairer, more resilient and prosperous Europe. Strengthening privacy standards for connected devices is essential for protecting European consumers. It's time for manufacturers and service providers to take responsibility and ensure the privacy of consumers in their products. Consumers must be able to easily compare and take privacy and cybersecurity risks into account when selecting digital products and services.
